Fulton County Announces Environmental Awards
School Environmental Education Program won an Environmental Program award for collecting school recyclables, planting gardens and creating an environmental club. Blue Heron Nature Preserve was awarded Best Development. Started by teacher Nancy Jones with seven acres, the preserve has expanded to 30 acres of protected land with walking trails.
The Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Urban Garden Program also received an Environmental Program award for its quarter-acre Unity Garden, a farm laboratory and educational facility at the CNC. The garden has contributed more than 23 tons of freshly grown produce to the North Fulton Community Charities Food Pantry.
Juanita Wallace won Environmental Advocate for her work to protect greenspace in English Avenue and Vine City.
Pamela Harvey also was awarded Environmental Advocate for cleaning up an illegal dumping spot on Campbell Road and for creating awareness of illegal dumping in South Fulton.
Livable Buckhead PATH400 received Best Development for its 5.2-mile walkable, bikeable greenway, converting unused right-of-way along GA 400.
Sandy Springs Environmental Project earned Environmental Advocate for its work in public policy and science.
St. Anne’s Episcopal Church Green Team earned Best Development for installing solar panels and other green-building measures, starting a recycling program and creating a wildlife sanctuary.
According to the Fulton County BOC’s press release, honorees’ efforts align with the county’s Strategic Priority Areas set forth by the Fulton BOC under the 2016-19 Strategic Plan.
