Natural Awakenings Atlanta

YogaWorks acquires Infinity Yoga

Infinity Yoga, Atlanta’s largest independent yoga studio with four locations, has been sold to Yoga- Works of Los Angeles.

Infinity founders Becky Nickerson and Matthew Shechtman will join YogaWorks as employees. Nickerson will manage teacher development for the company’s southeast region, and Shechtman will have overall responsibility for the region.

“With working 24/7 and then having a new child, selling was a no brainer,” said Shechtman. The opportunity presented itself, he explained, and given potential buyers, “very few are able to execute this kind of transaction.”

But selling did not come without some angst. Nickerson and Shectman were not willing to sell and then leave. The ability to stay on as staff was a significant factor in their decision.

Shectman says that the Infinity locations will be rebranded, but that the classes and teachers will remain. Even better news for current teachers: Their pay will increase and they will receive health and 401k benefits.

YogaWorks, founded in Santa Monica in 1987, has grown to 66 studios. The company closed its initial public offering in August and immediately went on a buying spree, picking up studios in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Houston and now Atlanta. The Infinity locations are YogaWorks’s first studios in the Southeast.

Founded in 2013, Infinity Yoga has received a number of accolades including MindbodyOnline.com’s 2016 Business of the Year and Atlanta Magazine’s 2016 Best Studio. In addition, Nickerson has won several teaching awards, including Atlanta Magazine’s best power-yoga instructor.
