Celebrate MLK Day with Service Opportunities

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, observed on January 15, is a day of service for many companies and individuals. This year’s celebration occurs nearly 50 years after his assassination in April 1968. Hands On Atlanta, founded in Atlanta and an affiliate of the now international

Hands On Network, is celebrating the anniversary with two days that honor Dr. King. Sunday, January 14, Hands On Atlanta will host a Sunday Supper with more than 200 community and business leaders. The supper, which will be organized around Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign, will be streamed live via Facebook, according to HandsOnAtlanta.org.

Residents are encouraged to hold their own Sunday Suppers with tools and resources provided by HandsOnAtlanta.org.

On Monday, according to the organizations website, Hands On and the King Center will mobilize 1,500 volunteers in 25 projects throughout Metro Atlanta. Activities will include school and park beautification, meal packing and literacy projects.

Readers who are looking for additional inspiration on how to spend the day can visit several websites for ideas and opportunities. Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, according to PointsOfLight.org, has a volunteer search box at the top of the page where users can post their zip codes to find local opportunities. Points of Light has an Atlanta-based office and multiple local service opportunities.

Pebbletossers.com also has a list of projects that allow all ages and offer the whole family a way to volunteer together.
