Natural Awakenings Atlanta

Urban Pie Introduces New Vegan Pizza

“We have a new pizza: It’s called ‘We Got The Beet,’ with roasted beets and cauliflower, with a pesto base and goat cheese,” says Amy Lane, general manager of Kirkwood’s Urban Pie. “We can make it vegan with vegan cheese.”

For more than 12 years, Urban Pie has been a fixture on Atlanta’s pizza scene, known for its flavorful thin-crust slices. Its owner, Lisa Curtis, wanted to bring that flavor to Atlanta’s vegans.

Lane says that Curtis “recognized a trend in the neighborhood” when she introduced vegan pies over four years ago. Lane came to Urban Pie in June from a fine-dining company in Newnan.

“I noticed it right off the bat—coming from Newnan—what a difference it was,” she says about the vegan culture in Atlanta.

Once vegan options were introduced, Lane says, demand for the pizza tripled. Urban Pie’s menu now includes a vegan chorizo pizza with dairy-free Daiya cashew cheese, which comes from the Dulce Vegan Bakery and Cafe down the street, soy chorizo, green peppers and red onions.

In addition, all Urban Pie’s vegetarian pizzas can be made vegan.

Urban Pie is located at 2012A Hosea L Williams Dr. NE in Atlanta. See UrbanPiePizza.com.
