Therapeutic Use of Yoga for People with Cancer

A Workshop for Yoga Teachers with Sandra Susheela Gilbert.
Statistics from the National Cancer Institute, state that in 2016, there were an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in this country with an expectation of 20.3 million by 2026. It is estimated that in 2018, there will be 1, 735, 350 newly diagnosed people with cancer.
It is likely that a person who is newly diagnosed or is a cancer survivor is already participating in one of your Yoga classes. The need is great to offer Yoga to people with cancer that is accessible and safe whether it be in a Yoga studio or medical setting.
This weekend workshop, both lecture and practice, is aimed at offering an overview for Yoga teachers in working with people with cancer safely and wisely, based on the teachings of YCat: Yoga Therapy in Cancer and Chronic Illness.
The approach is based in meeting people where they are, adapting concepts rather than scripting asanas for a particular diagnosis and creating an accessible Yoga practice for use across the cancer continuum.
Topics will include: Pathophysiology of cancer, Side effects of cancer and cancer treatment, Rationales and adaptions of Yoga in medical settings, Yoga philosophy, Guided Imagery in healing and YCat Yoga classes.
