Essential Oils for Anxiety and Depression

Aromatherapy, in the true sense of the word, is the very systematic use of highly therapeutic essential oils to maintain and promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It operates on two very fundamental sensory levels.

  1. Tactile. The primary use of essential oils is through topical application. While the skin is relatively impermeable to water and salts, essential oils can easily pass through the upper layers of the skin. This is because our skin is rich in lipids—natural fats and oils—and essential oils are fat-soluble. From the skin, they can travel around the cells until they are absorbed through capillaries, blood vessels and the lymphatic system.
  2. Olfactory/Inhalation. This level allows essential oils to enter the nose, sending input to the olfactory bulb, which in turn affects the body’s limbic system. The oils bind with the nerve cilia, thus producing an immediate mental, emotional and physical reaction.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, but when it becomes chronic, it can interfere with daily life. It’s often marked by mental tension, fear, restlessness, rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and even behavioral changes. At its worst, anxiety may lead to panic-like symptoms or emotional overwhelm.

Depression—also called clinical or major depressive disorder—is a serious mental health condition that impacts how one feels, thinks and functions. It can involve persistent sadness, a lack of interest or motivation and fatigue. While medication and therapy are common treatments, holistic approaches such as essential oils can offer supportive benefits.

As anxiety and depression are on the rise these days, essential oils can go a long way to help reduce symptoms.

Essential Oils That Support Emotional Well-being

Lavandula officinalis

Essential oils can be used either topically or through the olfactory system. Here are several that can make a difference.

  • Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis): Soothes the nervous system and promotes relaxation.
  • Neroli (Orange Blossom) (Citrus aurantium): Calms the heart and uplifts the spirit.
  • Geranium (Pelargonium odoratissimum): Balances hormones and emotions.
  • Rose (Rosa damascena): Comforts the heart and nurtures emotional healing.
  • Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata): Supports adrenal balance; helpful for frustration, anger, and sadness.
  • Frankincense (Boswellia carterii): Deepens breath and calms nervous tension.
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): Well-known for its ability to soothe anxiety and promote sleep.
  • Sweet Orange and Citrus Oils: Naturally uplifting and mildly antidepressant.
  • Bergamot (Citrus bergamia): Alleviates tension, supports mood, and helps release emotional stagnation.
  • Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea) A beautiful essential oil that helps balance hormones, is a uterine tonic, antidepressant and gives one confidence. It is known as a “euphoric” and is also called the oil of creativity.

An Aromatherapy Blend For Anxiety Relief

Ylang

To use this calming blend, use a spray or inhaler. If using a sprayer, hold it about 12 inches from your face and breathe it in. This will produce an immediate effect.

In a one-ounce (30 ml) bottle of carrier oil, such as apricot kernel or jojoba, combine:

3 drops roman chamomile
6 drops neroli
8 drops geranium
6 drops frankincense
6 drops ylang ylang
6 drops lavender

Blend in a clean glass bottle. To use as a spray, add a few drops of vodka as an emulsifier and top with filtered water. Shake well.

Aromatherapy Tip: Always dilute essential oils before skin application and perform a patch test with any new blend. ❧
